The New Farmers Market: Evenings on 6th Avenue

by Lauren Lenore on 08/13/08 at 7:36 pm

The newest farmers market in Tacoma, evenings on Tuesdays. With the local produce market booming, the new farmers market offered on Tuesday evenings is a great option for people who can’t attend the market held downtown during the day on Thursdays or the one in the Proctor District on the weekend.  Opening day was just a few weeks ago, and already the market is a popular destination.  Held at the corner of 6th Avenue and North Pine Street in North Tacoma, this market has an amazing location next to some of the most popular bars and restaurants in the area.
While smaller than the market downtown, I was still impressed with the selection. There were several kiosks with organic fruit and vegetables, art and lots of delicious already made dinner options. Because they have just gotten started, I wouldn’t be surprised to see this market continue to expand.  The market goes until September 30th.

Stop by Engine House 9 Bar afterwards!

Engine House 9, a great local bar with an unrivaled selection of beer, is right in the middle of the market and offers live music on their outdoor patio.  I especially enjoyed the vibe of the evening farmer’s market because it didn’t feel like people were in a rush to make it back to work before their lunch break was over.   People even have the option to take cooking lessons at the Urban Gourmet kiosk, where using the local food you just bought at the market is very much encouraged.  One ingredient you shouldn’t miss is the famed cheese from Estrella Family Creamery in Montesano, which several of my friends have raved about.  I don’t know anything about cheese, and frankly hadn’t even heard of most of these types of cheese, but what I do know is that it was delicious!

Lots of kiosks to browse.Fresh local produce at every turn.

One of the most exciting things that has been happening with our local farmers markets is that many restaurants are starting to use local produce in their meals too.  Primo Grill which is located on the other side of 6th Avenue proudly displays a banner announcing their use of local food in their cuisine.  I definitely have had a hard time finding organic options in Tacoma supermarkets, so now that organic farms are bringing their high quality and reasonably priced produce to our door, there is no excuse not to eat healthy!

Visit the restaurants who use local foods.
